All 3 and 4-year-olds in England are entitled to 15 hours of free early education each week for 38 weeks of the year. Some 2-year-olds are also eligible.

You can start claiming free early education after your child turns 3. The date you can claim will depend on when their birthday is.

For example:

If your child's Birthday is between:  1 January - 31 March
You can claim the beginning of term on or after 1 April

If your child's Birthday is between: 1 April to 31 August
You can claim the beginning of term on or after 1 September

If you child's Birthday is between 1 September to 31 December
You can claim the beginning of term on or after 1 January

In a registered early years setting like a nursery, pre-school or with a childminder to help support their learning and development.

You may be eligible for a funded place for your child if you receive one of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment Support Allowance
  • The guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit but not entitled to Working Tax Credit and annual income less than £16,190
